Fiji Pro Wrap Up

Fiji Pro Wrap Up

The Volcom Fiji Pro saw several days of electrifying surfing and world-class waves both at Restaurants and Cloudbreak. Mick Fanning was in fine form throughout the event, showcasing his backhand barrel riding skills and massive hacks en route to the final. He was able to defeat close friend and reigning World Champion Joel Parkinson in the Quarterfinals and goofy-footer CJ Hobgood in the Semifinals but was unable to best Kelly Slater in the final.

“What an amazing event to see Kelly get all those 10s” DH said of the epic Final. “It was just great to see Mick the day before his birthday get a few buzzer beaters and come up and challenge Kelly with a 9.2 at the start. We thought Mick was in it, but you can never count out Kelly. He got that 9.8 and then that 10 and it was pretty much over from there. But it’s game on from here on out, Mick is only a few hundred points behind Kelly and it’s going to make for a great rest of the season. I’m off to Bali this week, staying with Mick and his coach Phil. I can’t wait to catch up with him and the rest of the team. I also just want to wish Micro a speedy recovery.”

“I’m pretty stoked,” Fanning said. “I started off with the 9.2 and saw Kelly doing the Jesus Christ on the one behind it. When Kelly didn’t get a 10 on his first wave I thought, ‘I’m still in this,’ but then he shut the door on the next one. Overall I’m happy. I didn’t really have a good start to this event and then at the end it came good.”

Mick chose to surf his 6’0 and 6’1 MF Ducks Nuts with rounded pins. These models are based off the board he rode to victory in Tahiti last season. Fanning currently sits at no. 2 in the race for the ASP World Championship heading into the Oakley Pro in Bali.
