It’s been a great start to the season for current world number one Adriano De Souza. After an early exit at the Quiksilver Pro, Adriano has fine-tuned his surfing and it has never looked better. Fresh off a historic victory at Bells Beach, Adriano was a force throughout the 2013 Billabong Rio Pro. De Souza (the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro winner) went on a rampage to advance to his second career Billabong Rio Pro final defeating 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) in the quarter finals and fellow countrymen Gabriel Medina (BRA) in a nail biting semi-final heat.
Adriano’s win at Bells Beach combined with his 2nd place finish at the Billabong Rio Pro launches the Brazilian to the number 1 position in the current ASP Rankings ahead of Jordy Smith, Mick Fanning, and Kelly Slater.
Mick Fanning was unable to defeat Jordy in their semi-final heat but has been surfing consistently throughout the opening events of the 2013 season and hoping to carry this momentum from Brazil to Fiji, the next stop on the ASP World Championship Tour.
“Adriano has been surfing amazing ever since the Quiky Pro. With his victory at Bells and now finishing second in Brazil I can only imagine how happy he is. We recently made the move to shorten his boards from 5’10 to 5’8 for beach breaks and I think you can see it in his surfing, especially some of the airs he was pulling off. It just goes to show you how versatile the DX1 is, you can surf it at 6 foot bells or in 3 foot beach breaks. Adriano is headed back to the Gold Coast and I am excited to make him some more boards.”
