2012 Mick Fanning Series

2012 Mick Fanning Series

by DHD Surf

Darren Handley and Mick Fanning are stoked to introduce to you the new ‘MF’ Series to kick off the year 2012. Although the refinement and constant pursuit for improvements never stops with these two, Mick and DH have made some big changes this year. Tightening up the range and recognising three distinct Mick Fanning models that will be used on tour this year. The Ducks Nuts Micks go to performance board. The Eager Beaver as Mick’s step down model when the surf gets a little smaller and lacks power. The Sweet Spot a tight little model for throwing around in the pocket on good days, as Mick says this one just wants to stay in the sweet spot of the wave. Have a read below to hear what Mick has to say about his models and click on the links to see the full size range of each model.

Ducks Nuts is Aussie slang that means “the best thing.” I’ve worked on this board for a long time. If the waves are pumping with really clean conditions that’s the board I go to. It has single to double concave thru the fins and heaps of drive. I ride 5’11 1/2×18 5/8×2 1/4.”MF

Eager Beaver is the model that adds life and fun to smaller, sloppier conditions. Its based off boards I’ve been riding in California and Brazil and features deep single concave into slight vee off the tail giving you more zing and the ability to change up your lines. I ride 5’11×18 3/4×2 ¼.”MF

Sweet Spot is the model that I made with the idea of staying right in the pocket of the wave. I can jam it as hard as I want and know it will hold, and not worry about nosediving or getting stuck in the curve because there is less board. I ride it at Snapper, Kirra, and places like P-Pass, and the thing goes amazing. I ride 5’10×18 3/4×2 ¼.”MF

2012 Range Update

2012 Range Update

by DHD Surf

I have spent the last twelve months focusing on updating my models and getting that extra performance out of each one. Working closely with team and adding some minor updates that have emerged from the latest models I am really stoked with how the range is performing. I reckon it is the tightest range I have ever had and there is something in there for everyone.

Mick Fanning Range
Mick and I never stop developing this range, tweaking little things each week. This is definitely the happiest Mick has been with his boards.

MF1- By far the most tweaked model in the range. If you want to ride what Mick is riding this is his performance model.

MF Coffee Bean – This model is still holding up as Mick’s step down board for when the waves are lacking that little bit of push.

MF Swivel – This is Mick’s funboard, keeping him in the water on those days that most people can’t be bothered. A great small wave option for surfers of all ages and ability.

MF Nexgen – This is the grommet version of the MF1, for the young grommet who is ready to take their surfing to the next level.

The Project 15’s
These boards are going mental and are probably my best selling models at the moment. Everyone has really been stoked with the performance of these models and are fast becoming the go to board in everyone’s quiver.

Project 15 – This is the original P15 and is a great board for speed and fast tight turns. Performing in small weak waves as well as good surf up to overhead.

Project 15 Nexgen – Probably the best board on the market for any grommet wanting to really push their surfing.  Great for airs and super tight turns in the pocket.

Project 15 Pro – Some surfers are looking for that refined P15 that can become their all rounder. This is a great option if the original P15 seems a little short and wide for your liking. If you are riding a P15 pro, get ready for a heap of speed and a board that wants performance from its rider.

D-Series
The D-Series just never seems to age, I have worked closely with all my teamriders tweaking this range to perfection.

D1 – This is a real popular model amongst the team riders. With the 4×4 diagonal glass job it’s one of the lightest and strongest boards on the market. The team keep coming back to the D1 as their go-to board in small to medium surf, and have asked me to make some slight changes to the nose and rocker to prevent it from flipping out.

D2 – It still surprises me how well it goes and how much good feedback I get. This year I made some really small adjustments, because of the great new machinery we have in factory as well as the 3D design tools available, I’ve been able to really clean the D2 up, make it really look good, and go even better.

D3 – The D3 has been the go-to board when waves are 4-5ft plus, the extra rocker volume and concave helps control the power of the waves throughout.

D4 – Lots of the team riders have been riding the D4 as their small wave contest board, as it is just flies in small waves. Have only made small changes this year, the plan shape has been refined, touch more single concave, and the fin placement has been repositioned for even more drive.

In The Mix

Puzzle Piece – This is a new addition to the range and has emerged from working with a number of the team riders. They are using this model as an all round performer for competition surfing and free surfing. A great performer that can handle whatever you throw at it.

Switch Blade – This is the latest spin-off from the wide tail boards everyone has been riding. Don’t be fooled in thinking this model is just for the small days. You will have a lot of fun on this model in the small and the good surf. Get ready to be surprised, this model is built to perform. I have included a carbon tail on the glass job, to keep that extra strength through the tail.

Monster – The Monster has been an amazing board, and definitely the one that I rode most this year. The smoothness of the round tail has been great, and the ability to mix the fins up just gives the Monster an added dimension. Very small changes this year, freshened the decal and spray, and have neared absolute perfection in the design with the help of the machine.

Margo Nugget – This year I’ve refined it just a touch, it’s just a great board for people looking for volume, but also that paddling power. I’ve thinned the tail for a better push into the wave, and refined the nose for an easier duck dive. The Nugget is my best selling board for big guys, I’ve had so many people telling me just how much they love this board.

The Weapon – This is another one of my favourites, similar to the Nugget and Monster this has been a popular model for bigger guys. It is a super fast performer with a lot of bite. I love surfing it at Snapper on the small days, it is a great paddler and it really runs nicely down the line. This year I have just thinned it back a little in the rails, so as it can be ridden by a wider range of surfers in more conditions.

Puzzle Piece

Puzzle Piece

by DHD Surf

Over the past year or so and whilst travelling overseas,  I noticed a trend that saw a lot of my friends and good surfers leaning off the shorter, fatter, wider craze that was taking place, and jumping back on the regular standard short board. I was finding that these surfers were wanting to surf the standard short board shape but still have the paddle and performance of the shorter fatter boards. This inspired me to design the Puzzle Piece in order to give these surfers what they want!

The Puzzle Piece is a fast, responsive and user friendly performance short board that combines a slightly thicker rail and hip rounded square for extra squirt off the tail. With a slightly wider outline and added foam under the chest, the Puzzle Piece is your perfect all – rounder for all conditions.

The Switch Blade

The Switch Blade

by DHD Surf

The Switch Blade is a small wave performer, designed for the 1-5ft range as a fast and loose option for all skill levels. With a wide rounded square tail, flatter rocker and straighter plan shape, this model paddles easily and generates plenty of speed straight off the mark.

The single concave vee that is more like a concaved vee allows for smooth rail to rail transition, which is needed with the extra width.  A flatter deck with medium boxy rail, this model has plenty of flotation and bite in smaller conditions. The fins are angled to allow for loose release in small and larger conditions whilst maintain speed through turns.

The model is glassed 4x4x4 with tail carbon patches for extra strength. This design is a great option for the surfer looking for performance, speed and paddle power in smaller days and will handle whatever you can throw at it.

DHD Comments: The ‘Switch Blade’, this is my latest spin off from the wide tails boards we are seeing the pro’s riding lately. Ever since Dayne Reynolds grabbed the world’s attention with his Dumpster Diver, this style of board has become the in thing at the moment. All my team have been asking for it which created the Project 15 and now the Switch Blade. I was sitting in LA having a few beers with some mates and I thought it would be a good name.

The Switch Blade is designed for having fun and performance surfing in small or fun surf. The extra foam

running through a wider, shorter plan shape creates a small, fast, loose and fun ride. I have also incorporated this unique single concave vee through the bottom that I don’t use in my other models. It creates heaps of speed and allows for fast powerful turning in small waves. Mitch Colebourne has been riding this model a heap and it is fast becoming another go to option for my team when the waves are small and fun.

I reckon just about any surfer can ride a Switch Blade, it has the paddle power and forgiveness for beginners and intermediate surfers to progress their surfing and have heaps of fun. It can also handle the power and deliver the performance of advanced to pro surfers. If you want to have some fun and throw the tail around in small days, the Switch Blade is definitely an option worth looking at.

Project 15 – The Complete Range

Project 15 – The Complete Range

by DHD Surf

The Project 15 has been a huge success, surfers around the globe have embraced DH’s new design and the feedback is that it is changing the way they surf and they way they approach their turns. DH’s team have really loved this design and can’t get enough of them. Working closer with the team DH recognised some more specific options with the Project, introducing the Project 15 Junior and the Project 15 Pro.

The Pro

My A-team, Mick, Mitch, Jordy etc were all liking the Project, they just wanted it a little sleeker and not so curvy. This created the Project 15 Pro a step down option for high performance surfers. These guys can generate their own speed and don’t want the width of the Project 15. I designed the pro so these guys can benefit from the unique performance of the Project without moving too far away from the all round performer.

The design is a little narrower and ridden a little longer for high performance surfing, a great step down option for surf 4ft and under. For the high performance surfer the narrower plan shape allows for quicker rail to rail transition. The rocker still generates heaps of speed and the extra width through the nose allows easy landing of airs. This design can be ridden as a step down and an all rounder.

It is suitable for surfers that can surf ok and want to keep pushing their surfing, if you feel you can handle these measurements. If it feels to short and narrow then you will be suited on the Project 15. IF I haven’t covered your measurement contact me and I can shape you a custom.

Next – Gen

I had been working on the Project 15 with a number of my junior team riders. Garrett and Jack Robinson were really frothing, the feedback was that they were surfing them more and more in comps, it was becoming their go to board. This really got me thinking how perfect this design is for grommets the uniqueness of its design and performance is really paving the way for the future of surfing for the next generation.

The extra nose makes it easier to catch waves, land airs and ride shorter boards for tighter turns. Although it has a wider and curvier outline the tightly pulled in rounded square allows for tight turns in bigger waves. The rocker creates so much speed and carries the board through the flat sections and generates speed out of the pocket.

It is the perfect design mix for grommets, easy wave catching, fast, stable, loose tight and great for landing airs. For all the groms out there, this is the ultimate board. Whether you are just starting or really starting take your surfing to the next level, the Project 15 Junior is a blast.

I recommend all grommets get on one of these it is the first junior model I have designed that is suitable for all levels of junior surfing. Whether you are just starting or competing you are going to get a rush out of this board and really see your surf progressing.
