The DHD Team at Snapper

The DHD Team at Snapper

by DHD Surf

2014 is on, and we’re as excited as ever. The team are pumped and focused on victory, and here at DHD we’re pumped and focused on creating the right equipment to carry them there.

“Congrats again Mick, it was a great night at the ASP awards night, 2013 was another exciting year done and dusted.

Now 2014 is rolling in with a bang, looking like we’re going to be getting some good surf for the start of the comp 3-4ft all weekend with good winds.

I’ve been making a bunch of boards for Mick, Steph, & Wilko, and they are looking very sharp, perfect for Snapper and the expected conditions.

I’ve also been busy making a couple of boards for a few of the crew coming in from around the world that want to test out my boards at the event.

Good luck to all the guys and girls, can’t wait for another year of running around the world chasing the team around while the search is on for their next world title.” – Darren Handley

WHAT THEY’RE RIDING

Keep your eyes open at the comp and you just might spot Owen Wright, Alana Blanchard, Mitch Crews, Taj Burrow & Jeremy Flores with some fresh DHD’s under their arms at Snapper.

by DHD Surf

DHD Surf welcomes Matt Wilkinson to the team this year, he’s a surfer with his own unique style in more ways than one.

Darren Handley has the following to say about this great addition to the DHD Family;

I’ve been working with Wilko – last year making him a few boards and helping him re qualify for 2014. This year Wilko has a new lease on life, now being 25 he’s ready to start training and get a little more serious about competing on the WCT.

I am really looking forward to making Wilko some good boards, getting some good feedback, and seeing some great results from him this year.

Matt is such a character in surfing (I’m sure you’ve seen his crazy wetsuits) and is always keen to test out some of our more interesting models & designs. You’ll be seeing some great clips coming your way of some of his test flights.

I’ve followed Matt’s progress through all his life, and he’s an amazing surfing especially on his back hand. I don’t want Matt to loose any of the character in the way he surfs and the way he treats himself, just add a bit more professionalism.

I expect to see some great things from the combination of Matt & my boards.
Welcome to the team Matt! I can’t wait to see your first CT event at Snapper this year.

At the DHD Factory we’re certainly happy to see more of Wilko’s personality around the place and look forward to seeing what 2014 brings for the DHD Team.

Quiksilver Pro Wrap Up

Quiksilver Pro Wrap Up

The opening stop on the ASP World Championship Tour went down in epic fashion, with the semifinals and final culminating at pumping Kirra. Interestingly the top 3 surfers from the 2012 tour (Parko, Slater, and Fanning) made it into the finals for first stop on of the 2013 tour.

In his semifinal heat against Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning was off to an early lead in what can only be described as a ‘barrel shootout.’ Fanning put Slater on the ropes with 9.93 barrel as both former World Champions went wave for wave in classic Kirra conditions. It wasn’t until the last few minutes of the heat that Slater scored a perfect 10, taking the lead for the first time in the heat. Ultimately Slater won the semifinal with a combined two wave total of 19.37 to Fanning’s 18.60. “It’s a tough way to go out but you can’t be too upset when you put together a heat like that,” Fanning said. “I had a really good start and put in some solid scores. Kelly just did his ‘Kelly Thing’ and got that incredible 10 and really put himself back in the hunt. Shame I couldn’t get into the final with Joel, but it’s a good start to the year so I’ll refocus and get ready for Bells.”

5 time World Champion Steph Gilmore took 3rd place in the Roxy Pro, and showcased her prowess as arguably the greatest female surfer of her generation with her barrel riding skills in her quarter final heat also held at Kirra Point. She went on to win the Quiksilver Superheat surfing against fellow surfing icons Dane Reynolds, Jordy Smith, Craig Anderson, and Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew.

“You know the comp got off to a slow start with less than ideal conditions, but man it finished with some solid surfing. I mean I would have loved to see Mick make it into the final against Joel, but that heat against Kelly was amazing and so was Steph’s barrel at Kirra. I am pretty happy with how the team is surfing  and I know they are all happy with their boards. We even had a few test pilots riding some DHDs throughout the competition and they were ripping.  Mick, Alejo, and Wilko were all riding the Ducks Nuts and it was great seeing Wilko on his back hand at Snapper on one of my boards. Bring on bells!”
